The Derma Roller: Rachael Ray’s Top Anti-Aging Picks

Recently on a Rachael Ray show called the Human Lab Segment, she had her audience members test out several anti-aging creams and devices and had them report back in a few weeks with their results. She also had a guest panel that included Dr. Loretta Ciraldo from the University of Miami to evaluate each product.

One of the most popular anti aging skincare she evaluated was the derma roller. The derma roller is a very small rolling device that contains 192 micro points made of surgical steel.

Derma Roller – How It Works

This micro needling or skin needling technique is one of the hottest natural remedies for removing acne scars and wrinkles, stretch marks, white heads, and black heads. The derma roller is also used to perform collagen induction therapy (CIT). According to numerous studies, when these needles or points are rolled over the skin, it causes the body to naturally produce collagen in effort to heal the skin , something our skin doesn’t do so often after we reach a certain age.

Studies performed by on 600 people with aging skin and acne scars found that there was a 60% reduction in scars and incredible 40% improvement in skin rejuvenation. Research suspect that the increased collagen production from the puncture wounds created by the derma roller is what help to fill in depressed scars, reduce and smooth out stretch marks and fill in lines and wrinkles.

So how does it work? When the derma roller is rolled over the skin, it creates tiny little punctures into the upper dermis of the skin which signals to the body that it should begin a wound healing process. This means it starts to increase production of collagen fibers, skin cells, and elastin. This helps to fill in scars, wrinkles, and stretch marks. In fact, the derma roller is considered one of the best acne scar treatment you can perform at home.

In addition, it allows maximum absorption of your best wrinkle creams or any anti aging creams. Each rolling session stimulates collagen to reduce wrinkles and scars – like a mini-instant face lift. Even the best anti aging creams alone can’t come close to the benefits of the roller. It was encouraging to see a beauty product review that was actually based on some science.

One of the best advantages of the derma roller is that its non-invasive and doesn’t require healing or downtime like other skin rejuvenating techniques. And its also safe for men and women of color; this is also an issue when considering chemical or laser peels.

Not necessarily. I ate a few pigs feet when I was a kid. The thought of me eating them now is not very appetizing. I know that many cultures use pig’ feet in a variety of recipes, but I think for some people its an acquired taste. But there are alternatives to injections, face lifts, and cosmetic surgery.
