Healthier Choices for Salad Dressings

If you’re like most people, you love to pour rich, creamy dressing all over the vegetables in your salad.  And while you may think you’re eating healthier because you’re eating your veggies, the salad dressing may be weighing you down more than you realize.

Salad dressings, while tasty, are often full of fat and calories that you don’t need when you’re trying to slim down and get healthy.  But there are alternatives that are healthier for your body yet still delicious.

One option is to mix olive oil or flaxseed oil with red wine or balsamic vinegar.  You need one part oil to one part vinegar.  You may also want to salt and pepper it before shaking to mix the two ingredients together.

While olive oil and flaxseed oil have fat and calories, they are a healthy source of fat that your body needs.  In fact, flaxseed oil is used by so many organs of your body that it’s almost impossible for it to be converted into fat cells.

Another way to dress up your salad without adding extra fat is to squeeze a little lemon juice on your salad.  It gives it a tart sweetness that many dieters enjoy.

You can also choose bottled dressings that are vinaigrette style and have fewer calories and fat grams.  However, steer clear of low-fat and non-fat dressings.  While they may be lower in fat, they often have just as many (if not more) calories.  Why? Because to replace the flavor from fat, dressing manufacturers often load the bottle with sugar!

Finally, if you simply can’t go without your favorite salad dressing, you can try a method of eating it that won’t add as many fat grams to your day.  Instead of pouring dressing all over your salad, put the dressing on the side.

Dip the tines of your fork in the dressing before putting the veggies on it.  You’ll get a little dressing with each bite, but you won’t use nearly the same amount as if you pour it all over the salad.  In fact, you’ll be surprised at the great flavor and the small amount of dressing you actually need to feel satisfied.

If you’re the average person on a diet, then you’ve experienced times where you fall off the diet wagon and succumb to the many temptations in your daily life. It’s all too easy to be tempted by advertisements of the juicy hamburgers so perfectly put together and just waiting for you to order them.

Unfortunately, those ads can sabotage us when we’re trying to stick to our diets. One effective advertisement and you can cost yourself too many calories or fat for the day, but more important is the mental damage it does when you decide to give up your whole diet just because you had one bad day.

It may seem like the only answer to this situation is to stay away from fast food and not watch television commercials for the rest of your life, but that’s not realistic.  There are some other ways to keep your willpower intact when you do go to places that have tempting images of diet-killing foods.

What you see isn’t really what you get – Keep this in mind. How often have we seen the image of the perfectly thick hamburger and ordered it – only to find that what you get is a smashed up mess? The temptation is in the perfection. Think not of the image, but what it will really look like when you get it. Most of the temptation will be gone.

Get it your way – Don’t be afraid to ask for what you want or don’t want. If you decide you need a burger, then order it with no cheese or mayo as an open-faced sandwich. A regular hamburger can satisfy your hunger and will have less fat.

Use drive-throughs – Many times, you plan ahead what you’re going to order, but then you’re hit with large, tempting images on the menus inside the restaurant. Drive through menus have some images, but not as many – and it’s easier to divert your eyes away from the board if you already know what you want to order.

Drive throughs are also helpful when the smell of the fries boiling in oil tempts you to order the biggest size available. When you go through the drive through, the smell isn’t as apparent as it is inside.

Deliveries – If a restaurant delivers, use it to your advantage. You can plan what you want and order it without having to go to the establishment to see all of the tempting pictures on the wall. If they don’t deliver, ask someone else to go get your food for you.

Sometimes paying a little extra money to someone for doing you a favor can keep you from falling off the diet wagon. Let’s face it, temptations are out there and are noticed more readily by those who are on a diet. Take steps to prepare yourself for those situations ahead of time.

Eating out at a restaurant is a pleasurable experience as far as getting waited on and enjoying the relaxing atmosphere. But the other side to it is that it can wind up being more fattening than just enjoying a meal at home.

Here are some tips to keep in mind for a healthier meal out:

Choose a healthier restaurant – Try going to the places that advertise healthier menu choices.  Some restaurants have special sections on their menus specifically for low calorie or low fat food choices. Don’t be afraid to speak up and request something off the menu.

Dressing on the side – Salads are healthy choices, but some places put too much dressing on their salads, which can cost you unnecessary calories and fat. Simply order the dressing to come on the side and you can control the amount that goes on to your salad.

Choose places that cook with olive oil – Most restaurants will cook with fattening butter, because it’s less expensive for them than healthier olive oil. Don’t be afraid to ask whether a restaurant uses butter or olive oil to cook with – and request that your meal be prepared without lard or butter.

Omit items – If you just have to have that juicy burger, consider ordering it without the cheese, bacon or mayonnaise (or even the bun)!  Sometimes, omitting the cheese alone can save you as much as 25g of fat.

Avoid Buffets – The foods that you see in the buffets are ones the restaurants can easily make in bulk. These usually turn out to be fattening fried foods or pasta dishes. If you think you can easily steer clear of the fattening items and stick with healthier salads and foods, then go ahead and enjoy the buffet!

There’s nothing wrong with eating out once in awhile as long as you don’t overdo it. Don’t just watch what you order, but consider the size of the portions, too.  Ask for a to go box right when your food comes and put half of the food in it for you to eat as leftovers the next day.

How often have you embarked on your new diet program only to quit after being on it for a few days or weeks just because you couldn’t resist temptation for your favorite treats?  You make that mistake and feel that you haven’t only failed your diet, but failed yourself as well.

Although this is a common feeling that any human would go through, it’s not a reason to quit your diet altogether. There’s the old saying – “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” This holds true for your diet as well.

Small setbacks in your diet are to be expected. There’s a difference between a setback and giving into your temptations in moderation.  Unfortunately, quite a few people have let that failure become a reflection of who they are. You can bounce back from this way of thinking when your diet fails you.

It’s not easy, but if you’re passionate about your weight loss goal, then you can do it. If you fail on your diet, pick yourself up and brush yourself off. Analyze what set you back and decide ways that you can prevent it from happening again.

One of the most annoying (and embarrassing) things we endure in life is a loud grumbling stomach in a nice, quiet environment. Everyone knows it’s you, so it doesn’t do any good to try to hide it. 1.) Instead of the bag of potato chips, how about trying a bag of dried fruit? Fruit is good for you. Dried fruit is something that you can take with you in your car and keep in your purse and it won’t spoil right away.

2.) Candy bars are nice ways to take a bite out of your hunger, but it’s full of calories. If you’re on a limited caloric intake each day, a candy bar will eat up most of those allotted calories, leaving you with little left for the rest of the day. Instead of biting a candy bar, how about trying some of those low-fat, low-calorie granola bars? You’ll satisfy your hunger, stick to your diet and give your body some needed nutrients as well.

3.) Almost everyone likes a good chocolate chip cookie (or 2 or 3 or possibly more) when they’re hungry. Again, they taste good, but they can pack on the calories. Instead of those tasty cookies, how about going for rice cakes or low-fat, sugar-free cookies to squash your hunger?

4.) What about those jelly-filled donuts or other popular pastries? They’re good for taste (and a quick sugar high) but not good for your waistline. Maybe you can consider some sugar free Fig Newton’s instead. They don’t have as much fat as the pastries and they can satisfy your fruit craving that you may be suffering from when you reach for the jelly-filled donuts.

There are many more options out there to reach for the next time your stomach is grumbling and causing all eyes to be on you. Take healthy snacks along with you so that you can stay satisfied at any time of day.

What’s In The Truth About Abs Program?

I don’t often write reviews, but I’ve made an exception in this case. I believe there is more than just hype to the well known abs program ‘The Truth About Abs’. Most ‘lose fat’ information on the web tends to be just a lot of sales copy in front of a gimmicky product or crash diet. The reason I want you to read this whole article is so you can see that there is actually some solid information in this plan, and if followed will change your success with your get fit and stay fit endeavors.

While the book by Mike Geary, “The Truth About Abs”, is branded as a manual to creating 6 pack abs, it’s really much more of a lifestyle manual. The Truth About Abs is an easy to follow guide to changing how you eat and how you exercise in order to achieve the results you have always dreamed of. Mike’s 161 page book is broken down into 3 broad sections which are as follows:

1. An introduction to the program, and general information on what it means to be lean, body fat percentage, what effective abs training is, metabolism, and lean body mass.

2. Workouts, information on how to exercise more efficiently, multi-joint vs single joint exercises, and total body work outs with surprising information on why cardio IS NOT the best way to lose weight; and

3. Diet and Nutrition, including information on blood sugar and insulin, the Glycemic Index, and the thermic (calorie burning) effects of food.

The Truth About Abs training program has two parts : Interval training and Resistance and Weight training. The fitness schedules are easy to follow and are time effective. The program explains how sessions longer than 45-60 are not a good use of your time. The program calls for 3-4 sessions per week, each about 45-6- minutes.

If you are serious about getting a toned body then this schedule should easily fit into your week. You don’t need to be a member at a fancy gym and you don’t really need to have equipment at home. However, Mike suggests having an exercise ball and set of dumb bells at home to most effectively perform the suggested workouts. This basic equipment can easily be purchased for 30-40 dollars and will be worth every penny.

This program advises eating 5-6 smaller meals per day. Mike suggests eating every 3 hours during waking hours. He also suggests that you plan your meals for an entire week, and once per week go shopping only for the items you need for those meals.

There is also a section which explains how to determine your total calorie requirements – along with the more frequent smaller meals, this will help you figure out the total amount of food you should be consuming. This was a great help for me, to know that this is not a fad diet where you are will be hungry over half of the time.

Mike provides meal plans that are easy to shop for, easy to make and very satisfying. These meal plans provide you with more than enough food and you are unlikely to experience any hunger pains. However, you need to be disciplined with yourself and follow the recommended diet plans. One of the first things the book says is: “The nutrition section of this book is vitally important to your success. Let me state this loud and clear… if all you focus on is your training, and your diet is full of junk, you WILL NOT see results! You need to apply BOTH the training strategies as well as the nutrition strategies if you want to make this work.”

If you’ve been thinking of trying to lose weight for some time now, this is a great opportunity to make it happen. Mikes program contains so much information about how to really make your exercise and diet work together, it really is one of the most effective programs available today.
