Course Reading Speed Improves Cognition And Comprehension

by Josh Atree

Teachers, cognitive scientists, and educational psychologists have researched the relationship of reading speeds and cognitive skills and their efforts appear to be bringing results. Researchers from the University of Aberdeen reported in a notable academic journal that they have found evidence to support what researchers probably knew all along but never had the data to prove. Levels of a readers understanding is in direct proportion to the reading course speed.

Our parents usually encouraged us to stay ahead of the class learning curve. They were right to think that faster reading speeds and comprehension leads to higher grades and a better overall school experience. In interviewing over 9,000 students, parents, and educators, researchers found that students who read above the class combined learning speed, would find more time to revise their learning habits, and retain more of what they had learned.

The results of the study did not completely satisfy the researchers. The head researcher had said that there is a need to go further and analyze the connection between the understanding of educational curricula and course reading speed.

It is assumed by cognitive scientists that there is a critical threshold reading speed, past which understanding is greater than the national average. They refer to this as the breakthrough reading speed and further research into the definition of that threshold limit is vital if we desire to learn more about the relationship.

A person’s reading speed is greatly influenced by how much the person was read to as a child and how many books were available for the child to read. The child’s reading speed will be higher once he or she begins school. Reading speeds really don’t change much as the person gets older.

According to this study, Children with unique educational needs can enhance their information retention levels with support from teachers and remedial classes. Increasing the child’s reading speed to a point close to the threshold limit will work, so long as there is as much time spent on reading as there is on other remedial aspects.

There has been much research on the linkage between cognition and speed reading by a variety of professionals such as educational psychologists, teachers and cognitive science researchers. Recently a study undertaken by researchers from the University of Aberdeen was published in an academic journal, which appears to prove that comprehension is proportionally linked to the course reading speed. One area that scientists are considering for future search is exploring “breakthrough reading speed.” For scientists to uncover just how cognition and class reading speed are related, they must discover the threshold level, provide that it really exists indeed.

Class Reading Speed Can Increase With Speed Reading Class

by Josh Atree

No matter what level of schooling students are at, all are under pressure to attain high levels of reading comprehension and assignment completion. Because the amount of reading is often very large, reading speed can make the difference between success, mediocrity or failure.

Everyone’s reading speed is different. Some people read very well and comprehend everything they read. But other people have slower reading speeds and do not comprehend the information well at all. Still other people’s speeds change as well as their comprehension ability. Comprehension rates must be at least 50% for a person to be able to learn.

While sitting in class reading at the slow pace of school, your student may feel detained, held back from the great reading speeds that they have heard about on television, or the internet. They may begin to look to other media such as CDs, or software for help with their reading problem. Some will find themselves more desirous to go to a formal class setting to be tutored in reading speed and comprehension.

No matter what the form, all speed reading courses use similar techniques to increase reading speed and retention. These methods subconsciously relate to common day to day skills, such as skimming a text to find its keywords and get a basic idea of its contents. The brain then constructs a summary of the content from these key points. Speed reading courses can speed up this ability and teach the student tips to retain a greater quantity of a text’s information.

As we read, we also learn to recognize larger chunks of information. Moving from the sounds of a letter, to syllables and onto words and phrases. Speed reading courses educate the eye in recognition of series of words which are longer and wider than before, allowing faster processing of reading material. Do you remember moving your lips when reading silently? This is called subvocalization and is a habit which many reading courses work to break, while other courses use it to assist in the recall of difficult sections.

You may have been told that one of the most popular reading programs that increases class reading speed is not a good idea. This technique utilizes a finger or a guide to go underneath the line of print to lead the eye while reading. Dyslexic people have found this to be of great help and it helps with comprehension and speed in others.

Most adults read about 120 words per minute or two words per second, with no training at all. When trained, the rate can be tripled, while retaining comprehension. With this, reading assignments can take a third of the time as normal. Even when read twice to increase comprehension, a third of the overall time is saved. A good speed reading course can be beneficial to students who want to be more effective

Most of us have large amounts of reading to do. Therefore, reading speed can make the difference between success, mediocrity or failure. Of course reading speed varies from person to person naturally. Some have breakthrough reading speed and comprehension while others do not. When class reading speed is holding a student back from reaching their potential. A speed reading course may be your answer. It teaches you to recognize longer and wider series of words which processes the information faster. The methods of this class are skimming or sweeping a text to get just the keywords and the gist of the contents.
