Home Business Credit Card Scams: Beware

by David Gates

The number of home business opportunities (aka scams) that were bombarded with today is astoundingespecially given the state of our economy. Unfortunately, I became a victim to one myself since I lost my job several months ago and was feeling the pressure of not having a regular paycheck. Ive since decided to investigate the legitimacy of these jobs as theyre listed on so many job listings.

The common Home business opportunity scams are those of data entry jobs or taking diet orders. They look so promising on their website about the large amounts of money you can make. Many offer money back guarantees. This was what sucked me in. I though what could it hurt to give it a try. I can always get a refund.

I examined several opportunities quite thoroughly, trying to avoid the ads that simply sold software that taught me how to make money and focused on those that made me an employee and had specific instructions on pulling information from a website and enter into the forms provided. It seemed foolproof.

I picked one that guaranteed 100% money back, and, of course the \”special offer\” of a discount to the first one hundred people applying. The website promotion and what actually was delievered were night and day. As soon as I hit apply and entered my credit card information, I discovered I was duped. I had become a victim of a home business opportunity scam.

My job was to promote credit cards. I was to get their name on hundreds of search engines and others sites like \”FaceBook\”. I had not been told that a condition of being paid included my having to apply for several credit cards. On top of that, I also had to be applied by them to get my $20 pay from my employer. Then, I was told that another requirement was that I had to make $500 first or I couldnt get the $20 per credit card.

I couldnt get paid until Id provided leads. There was always another reason why I couldnt yet get paid and no way to really get answers since they didnt provide a telephone number or online helpjust an email address that was usually ignored (or it replied with generic, automated messages that werent applicable).

After I finally tracked down their phone number on my credit card statement, I left a message with the Australia-based office, but I never heard back. What I finally had to do was file a complaint against the company for fraudulent activity and Im waiting for that credit still.

Im a college graduate. Im embarrassed to have fallen for this scam. I know being desperate for a paycheck is stressful though and I was in a place where I was susceptible to the lure of easy money. I am ready and willing to work hard, I just couldnt do that through opportunities like this that are based on deception. I really want others to realize that a job probably isnt legitimate if the promises are too good to be true; research carefully before you take a chance on a work-at-home business.

Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid, of Working at Home

by David Gates

Do you want the freedom of working for yourself, not someone else? Do you desire a generous income working from your own home? It’s possible to achieve this, but beware! There actually are some excellent work from home programs that will satisfy these desires, but there are vastly more that are simply scams, set up to steal your energy, hope and of course your money.

The truth is that thanks to the recent advancements in the field of ‘Electronic commerce’ (read e-commerce) and the Internet, millions of people from different parts of the world are successfully generating a decent amount of money by doing online (and sometimes offline) jobs.

As they say, though, there are two sides to every story. For every person who has been able to succeed in their efforts to work from home there are others who have spent a few thousand dollars and ended up with nothing except frustration and betrayal.

Perform an online search using the keywords ‘work from home’ or ‘online jobs’ and you will would be surprised to see thousands of web sites which make tall claims of helping you generate a six figure income by doing almost ‘nothing’. Are you about to be scammed? That’s the problem. You don’t know who to believe. All those pictures of fast cars, mansions, palm trees, poolsis it real? Or just hype?

It is, without any doubt, difficult to work out which sites are genuine and which are scams. However, there are a few techniques that you can use to help determine which are genuine and which are not. Companies that lure you in with web sites of private jets, luxurious homes and cars are generally bogus. If the photos are polished and look like they come from a magazine, they may have – or at least were bought from a professional photographer or stock photography company. Look for photos that are obviously snapshots and unpolished.

Also, keep an eye out for outrageous claims. You’re not going to make a million dollars your first year in an online business opportunity. Genuine companies don’t make such ridiculous claims. Trust only those online companies that have a good track record at industry watchdog organizations. You can also visit online forums and find out other people’s opinions and experiences in order to discover genuine online jobs.

Without at least a minimum of training, it is all too easy to fall victim to bogus companies. You must learn how to spot them before you start looking around for an online job. Check the large number of home business reviews available on the Internet before paying any money to anyone.

Most of the fraudulent companies ask for a one-time membership, usually falling between $35 and $97. Some are the real thing, some are not. There are many companies which do provide you with genuine ‘work at home’ opportunities. But before spending even a dollar, do your homework. You’re not just saving the initial 97 dollars, because once you pay a scam, they keep coming after you for more and more money.
