Police were called to deal with a domestic dispute between a 14 year old girl and her mother…which resulted in the teenager not taking heed to the officer’s warnings. The 14 year old allegedly refused to listen or obey officers and was tasered. Fortunately for the child she was not killed. (Yes, my friends non lethal weapons…TASERS do kill). Instead, the young girl was rushed to the University of New Mexico Hospital to endure a two hour surgery. She survived the ‘tasing’ and has 18 staples and six stitches in her head as a reminder (or wake up call to us all). The adolescent was tasered in the HEAD! The taser dart pierced her skull and hit her brain.
This is an interesting story for a number of reasons and for me it raises a plethora of questions. The first and obvious is TASERS are dangerous!
Is there know way of controlling where a taser hits a person? Can tasers be aimed at perhaps… the feet or is that ineffective? Is a taser really necessary to halt an unarmed 14 year old girl? I’ve seen a few episodes of Cops. What happened to old fashion running and chasing a person down on foot? Is it just easier and less effort to tase than chase? How and why is it that a grown man…a police officer at that…can’t catch an unarmed kid?
Hmmmmm…
Where I come from it’s practically unheard of that parents have to go to the police because they are being abused by their kids. I’m sure it happens and thats really sad…BUT it leads me to more questions. Who is raising who? Who is in control? How are we parenting our kids these days? Who is to blame for a child to even have the gumption to raise a voice… RAISE A HAND…to their mother? Clearly, there is a lack of respect across the board. When we look at the back story of how and why the altercation between the mother and daughter started it reeks of serious problems.
There are many lessons that we can all learn from this situation. This could be a wake up call for us all…
If it takes a village to raise a child, what are the roles and responsibilities of the parents in the village?
If it indeed takes a village to raise a child, what role do police officers play in the village?
If it really takes a village to raise a child, what are the roles and responsibilities of everyone living in the village?
Just something to think about and consider. Most problems begin in the home and then extend outward to the rest of the world… We often look around and point the finger…when we need to take a look at and deal with HOME.
WE NEED TO CLEAN HOUSE AND TAKE CARE OF HOME PEOPLE.
A kid sending inappropriate pictures to older men is a cry for help…what’s going on at home? A kid fighting with parents is a hurting and angry child? What’s going on at home? Parents that have to call the police to restore order in their home have some problems that need to be addressed immediately. There are ISSUES in homes across America that are ignored, swept under the rug, denied, allowed, tolerated, unresolved etc… These issues start in the home and affect or infect the entire village…
Something else to marinate on… When you call upon or go to the police their job is to serve and protect. If you go to the police because you have a child that does not respect your authority as parent, chances are they will not respect the authority of a police officer either… What is the police officer to do? (Especially when you went to them). Sometimes the police are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. It’s a thankless job but somebody has to do it… We all have a role in the village.
I’m not saying that the police officer’s role is to taser kids that fight their parents… had he ran and tackled her to the ground that too would have been a problem…Had he thrown his baton (night stick/billy club) at her legs to stop her that would have been a problem…If he just let her run off that would have been a problem. What should the man have done?
What about the parents? What should they have done?
***It’s no secret, I am against tasers and police brutality…I am not anti-police. I’ve got friends and family members in law enforcement. I believe there has to be another way to keep officers safe as well as citizens safe. I do not think tasers are the answer.

I've seen some people on tv that are being tasered. People that are truly uncontrollable. That I couldn't blame other police having doing that. But to taser a kid which is unarmed like this one is another story.
I have to say, that yeah, maybe he should not have tased the girl (Heine site is 20-20). But come on… isn't this part of the problem here. The girl doesn't listen, when asked by the cops to stop, she was showing signs of violence and aggression. Her parents called the police!!!
The policeman has no idea what kind of kid she is going to be. Or if she has a weapon. She could have had a knife or whatever with her. Think about this logically.
The point of tasers is to give the person a chance, they are not made with the intent to kill.. maybe we should go back to guns only. They aren't lethal (Sarcasm).
Unless they find out that the police officer did this with intent to harm, I stand behind him. And support his actions.
Very nice article, you make some really good points!
