For health-conscious individuals, all roads lead to a gym, which caters to all their fitness goals. In the last decade, we have witnessed a stupendous growth in number of gyms and fitness centres across towns and cities, all housing sophisticated equipment for the benefit of their patrons. They have an ever increasing number of members, and the list is not restricted to body builders or sportsmen. People both young and old and across all segments of society visit gyms to stay healthy and keep their bodies toned.

However, some unscrupulous profiteers try to cash in on the gym culture by opening unprofessional centres that have no proper facilities, and people can risk their health by frequenting such places. Therefore, selection of the correct gym is possible only if a few significant aspects are kept in mind.

To start with, the location of the gym is very significant. It is always convenient if the gym is close to your workplace or home, as too long a distance can affect your motivation adversely. The overall environment in the gym, which includes the attitude of the employees, the layout, air-conditioning etc, must also be considered. Furthermore, the place must be large and comfortable. The standard of the gym in terms of state of the art machines and services must be checked as working on sub standard equipment can be very dangerous.

Additional facilities like steam baths, massage parlours etc are always welcome in a gym. Day care centres are also available in some gyms, which provide parents with some time for work outs.

Look for such gyms that have personal training services so that you can make use of exclusive individual guidance. Individual care and attention is possible with personal training and motivation levels are also improved through it. The personal trainers in the gym should be dedicated, focused and approachable so that you are able to derive the maximum out of their expertise.

One last thing to check is that the registration fee of the gym must be within the range and commensurate to the facilities and services that the gym promises. Flexible and long term packages offered by some gyms are particularly helpful in increasing affordability, but try to avoid too long a lock-in period.

When you think you got the gym for you, try out it first before purchasing a membership. You will make a big error if you just walk in buy a membership without seeing around at other options as well as seeing how the gym you are dealing is running.

In summary, your gym must be such that visiting it regularly and exercising in it must be a pleasant and rejuvenating experience for you, and this should be the prime parameter for your decision on the gym.
