I’ve been going to physical therapy for my back for several weeks. It's frustrating to find that now that I’m older (early 50s), my back isn’t healing as quickly as it used to.

I’m spending a lot more time doing preventive stretches to prevent reinjury of my back and I find that I simply can’t do a number of the activities I used to do, without paying a price later.

I recently went to a Physical Therapist for a lower back injury due to overexertion. While she didn't specifically use a massage chair, she did mention that an electric massage pad (the kind with rotating roller balls) that you can add to a high back chair can actually help, like the kind you can get from Homedics. She was right, it has helped a lot. I recommend icing the affected part for 15 to 20 minutes afterward.

The role of physical therapy in treating back pain is an important one. Physical therapists help patients manage and recover from debilitating physical conditions, and instruct them on how to deal with pain on a day-to-day basis so that they can function normally.
