Booooo Bonny Eagle High School: Student Kisses Diploma Goodbye

Tue, 16th June, 2009 - Posted by Living Life Abundantly

A high school in Maine has denied a senior his high school diploma for blowing a kiss to his family during the graduation ceremony.

Sounds like joke right? Nope, its for real.

graduation_capI don’t care if the kid did a double somersault ending in a split to accept his diploma, that school has no right to deny him his diploma. He earned it. That young man could’ve done a host of offensive gestures. All he did was show some love to his loved ones and you want to keep his diploma over that? Give him his diploma Bonny Eagle High School and stop being stupid!

When I graduated from high school I had a similar problem, the difference being I turned in a fake speech and spoke my mind in the “real speech” which included a gesture choreographed and qued with my class (NO we didn’t give the finger, we gave the hand, the show Martin and the whole hand thing was very popular back then)… I didn’t get my diploma until I was already in college in another state. My mother had to physically go and meet with the assistant principal to get it. So ridiculous!

When will schools realize that young adults will always be young adults…I’ve been to several college graduations—not much better in terms of the behavior of graduates. People are excited about being done with school! If they accomplished the task let them bask in it…not everyone makes it to see a high school graduation (hence America’s drop out rate). If a kid wants to celebrate and blow kisses let them do it, at least they aren’t shooting up the place. There are far worse things that a high school graduate could do!

Booooo is right on that high school. What does it say for our society when we punish our children for blowing a kiss to their family after graduating succesfully from 12 years of school. There are emotional moments in our life that drive us to display our happiness and gratitude. He was showing his gratitude to his family and friends, the people that helped him get there. And now we punish for that? Sounds a little 3rd world country to me. Ten lashings for smiling, life in prison for hugging your family in public, if you look happy, off with your head! If that official truly felt justified in witholding that diploma, then we dont need him passing on his disconnected emotions to impressionable children. Remove the tyrant!

As an European citizen I cannot accept that attitude from Maine's high school.
They over reacted in their stupid inside rules. Every student is a human not a robot. They should change the administration of that school.

What a joke of a decision. Really hope this one is reversed.

OMG, you must be kidding me really? I mean when will he get his degree/ I know personally things could get more out of hand than just a measly kiss. Come on, who denied the student their diploma, kids are going to be excited and parents proud.

Tipsy June 22, 2009

You gotta be kidding me! What base for that decision did they give? Once they get sued they'll start acting more sensible.

Michiel June 25, 2009

Are they serious, how can this possibly be happening. When did it become such a terrible think to blow a kiss that makes you kiss goodbye your diploma!?? That is just outrageous all that time to obtain the diploma to be denied it for a simple kiss, it isn't like they jumped off the stage and sucked face with a teacher! Like you said, perhaps the school would rather they are shooting up the place!

If a school is this douchey, it's not a school worth getting a diploma from. I'd rather not take the diploma and show all job/college interviewers the article about why I couldn't get a diploma. I think they'll have more appreciation for my patience knowing that I spent 4 years in a place so strict that you can't blow a kiss.

Great 4th of July post even if it is from June 16th! Talk about hypocrisy in terms of liberty and freedom.. society in the US seems to have this problem… we claim to admire those who take freedom and liberty seriously, then we try to punish them when they exercise their own rights to freedom of expression and freedom of speech. RIDICULOUS :)

Same situation we're seeing play out in the media right now over the death of Michael Jackson… you get someone who succeeds, who is free, who follows their heart and the main things that get focused on are the things that don't appeal to the widest possible base of people.. BOOO Bonny Eagle High! It's a little early in life to be showing young people they can get punished for earning something..

Thats well harse on the poor guy! can they actualy do this to him for real?

ScottPruitt July 7, 2009

Wow never thought that a lovely gesture like that could affect ones graduation.

Kelly July 13, 2009

Geez, I can't believe such a thing happened to that poor boy. I mean, you go on through hell in high school, you finally finish it, and then for just a silly thing you are completely humiliated. It was an absurd thing to do, and it only says bad things about the teachers there.

Mike July 13, 2009

Stupidity, all I can say. I guess, when your at that age you do soooo much clumsy, inappropriate stuff that sth like this should have never been mentioned.

Margo July 16, 2009

I can't believe a school has the power to do this, and that another superintendent from the school district has not stepped in to give the student his rightfully earned diploma.
If this superintendent thinks this kind of intolerant attitude motivates kids, she does not know much about kids or human nature and maybe should have some non-public job – crunching numbers maybe.
School shootings, abundance of drugs, tobacco and alcohol available to kids, gambling, gang violence are all issues threatening our youth. Yet a teen is punished for making it through high school, showing up at his graduation, having family there to support him and showing his excitement and love?
Sounds like Superintendent Suzanne Luk needs to be denied a paycheck until she can get things into perspective….Sheesh!

City of Hotels July 19, 2009

I guess the administration of that high school are the most stupid people ever, if they can not understand the young man correctly.

Firany July 24, 2009

I'll ignore the riddiculous reason. More important thing is how can they deny it to him for any reason?! He graduated and he deserves a diploma. The lawsuit will be epic!

Zerona July 29, 2009

that is just outrageous!
How can you deny the student his diploma jus coz he blew a kiss to his family. To a cetain extent it is understandable if he had made some obscene gesture. But for blowing a kiss?!!? Unbelievable!

This is just sad! I mean for jus blowing a kiss, they dont give the kid his diploma. I cant even imagine what they wouldve done if he'd given them the finger!

Conservative Cotton August 4, 2009

This school needs to stop taking itself so seriously and lighten up. For god sake, what harm is a little kiss!

RentinAix August 26, 2009

This is just sad. People these days take stupid little things and completely blow them out of proportion. At my graduation people said stupid things and did some stupid things but it was all in good humor. we graduated and were happy to move on and everyone knew it. Give him his diploma.

Life Insruance Leads August 30, 2009

Kissing is not that big of deal!

Flowers August 30, 2009

I'm sorry but I disagree… rules are rules and they are made for a reason. My school was just as strict with the graduation ceremony. And we were all told the rules ahead of time. We still had a great time! Strict doesn't mean "no fun".

Corvus August 31, 2009

That is garbage. School administrators gone wild. I hope they get fired!
