How come every human being desires to be love unconditionally? Maybe because there is a recognition that this is so unachievable in the normal course of most relationships? Or is it that we recognise that to receive love just for being us is so alien to our experience?
Or is it that this just fills the deep, gaping holes in the emotions of most men and women? Or perhaps that unconditional love fulfills the deepest fundamental heart cry of every human being?
We can recognise, that for most of us, unconditional love is a very rare luxury in our lives. For some it is in such short supply that they aren’t even conscious that they need it. They make do. But all off us have a deepest need for it.
And acceptance? Most of us desire to be accepted just as we are, “warts and all”. And yet, in the world that we live in, we are placed, categorized and valued by who we are, what we have done and what we look like. Acceptance is conditional – for the most part – on whether we ‘fit the bill’ or not. And yet ‘the bill’ is based on other peoples’ perceptions of what is a good, correct, fitting, acceptable, etc. level to have arrived at.
To achieve this is an impossibility but, nevertheless, if we are not careful, we can spend a lifetime trying to do just that. We struggle, strive, perform – do whatever it takes to achieve the pre-conditions that others have set for us.
The challenge is unwinnable. It becomes an endless pursuit or merry-go-round. Like a game of football where just when we think the winning goal is about to be scored, the goalposts are moved and play is extended. Again and again.
So, why bother? And is there a solution? As commented on earlier, the human condition inherently cries out for acceptance and love. Not just that – but to receive these UNCONDITIONALLY without having to strive to attain or achieve it.
To be given this……Our hearts cry out for that deep, soaking, freely given acceptance and love. But – more importantly – for it to be given without conditions or attachments.
Where can we get this? Is there an answer to the deepest need of the human heart? Can another meet our heart’s deep cry? Can it happen? Or do we give up and acknowledge that this is unattainable – and cease our searchings?
It has been claimed by some that it is only in the person of Jesus Christ – and in his claims to be God come down to earth in human form – that we will ever find perfect love and acceptance. Given unconditionally. for ever. Many others would respond that this is nonsense, preposterous, misleading, blasphemous even…..
What cannot be ignored, however, is that this particular question has been the source of major discussion and argument over the last two thousand years. And where do WE stand? How does it affect us? Can OUR needs be met thus? Until we seek for the answer to this question, we will never get to the truth.
