The death penalty is always a hot topic for discussion. There was a time when I supported the death penalty. There was a time when I was on the fence… now at the ripe age of 34 I am against the death penalty. Why? Well it seems clear that justice is not always blind and a fair trial is not always the case…

With such an imperfect legal/justice system how can anyone in good conscience support the death penalty? How many cases have people been found innocent after serving long prison terms? Not everyone in jail or on death row deserves to be there… Aside from that it’s strange that a so called Christian nation would practice some ole “eye for an eye” old testament practices… which really gets interesting when you think about the 10 Commandments and the whole Thou Shall Not Kill thing.

When a person is sentenced to death for killing someone else, by killing them, are we not doing the same thing? Its all so confusing. What are we doing? I just don’t believe it is our place to decide when and how someone should die. Lock ‘em up throw away the key if you must but killing people is just wrong…Doesn’t the Bible say “Vengeance Is Mine Saith The Lord.”

With the death penalty how do we really know that the person deserves execution? How do we really know if its the right person especially if we haven’t seen or heard all of the evidence?

troydavisstayFor example, Troy Davis.

This is the case of a man accused of murdering a Georgia Police Officer. However, there is a very strong possibility that Troy Davis is innocent.

Evidence in this case has been ignored and the Georgia Board of Pardon and Paroles has voted to deny clemency.

I know someone some where is thinking well he must have done something or he wouldn’t be in jail…

To that I say again… unfortunately, there are plenty of innocent people in jail.

It is concerned citizens committed to justice and truth that fight to help the innocent.

We owe it to ourselves, each other, and generations to come to do what is right.

Is it right to let a man be executed if we know that there is a possibility that he may very well be innocent?

What if it were you?

What if it was someone in your family or a friend?

Would you do something then?

Why not take action now?

Will you step up and be your brother’s keeper?

Will you care for a fellow human being?

I am uncomfortable with Troy Davis’ case. I find it disturbing and unsettling as an American and as a HUMAN BEING. I have signed the online petition and emailed by concerns to Governor Perdue. I urge you to do the same. If you’re unsure ask yourself

How does a man sit in prison facing the death penalty for almost 18 years when:

  • There was no physical evidence against Troy Davis.
  • The weapon used in the crime was never found.
  • The case against him consisted entirely of witness testimony.
  • Seven of the nine non-police witnesses have recanted or contradicted their testimony.
  • Many of these witnesses have stated that they were pressured or coerced by police.
  • One of the two witnesses who has not recanted or contradicted testimony is Sylvester Coles, the principal alternative suspect.
  • Nine individuals have signed affidavits implicating Sylvester Coles.

I think this is a worthy cause, because I firmly believe in justice, and the real pursuit of it. "Which is Truth"

This is a good article. I also would love to see more attention brought up on the injustices occuring in areas like Inglewood and other areas where police continue to abuse and shoot individuals and receive no more than a slap on the hand. Kicking individuals in the face, beating them when unarmed and shooting individuals who are unarmed. They should be held responsible for adhering to the law also. Wearing a badge doesn't put them above the law. This also includes the court system also (innocent individuals serving time for a crime they didn't do).

Only God can decide when a life is over.

I agree. Even I don't like the death penalty. It seems so primitive!

Dara May 29, 2009

There was an amazing documentary I netflixed about people who were wrongly accused of crimes and released from prison after dozens of years. Imagine if they were sent to death, wrongly convicted…sure is something to think about.

I am up for that and against the death penalty. I did visit the link in your post and did the right action. Thanks for a sensible post.

I think I agree with you, if we were able to be 100% sure, beyond doubt, that the person is gulity of commiting extreme and digusting crimes I think the death penalty may have a place, however if then is even 0.0001% of a change the person maybe innocent, as in this case, I think it would be completely the wrong thing to do.

Very insightful post.

this is soooo sad. Unfortunately, there are a TON of people in jail period that are innocent! Especially a large portion of black men. A lot of this has to do with the fact that the government is getting rich with americans tax dollars to pay for these men! The jail cells are FULL! Most of the biggest criminals are in the judicial and high places! It is really sick. As far as the death penatly, it should NEVER BE! Bad enough there are people in jail that are innocent. It is even worse INNOCENT people are being killed.

injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. I think the death penalty ought to be put to an end. Two wrongs do not make a right.

Rachel August 28, 2009

Great post.
I think the death penalty should`ve been brought to an end a long time ago, as it`s not serving any purpose; killing a man as an example, to scare other criminals into behaving evidently aint working.

john September 2, 2009

The death penalty should`ve been ended a long time ago. Quite amazing that some countries still kill people for their crimes; caveman mentality, if you ask me..

I'm not sure about death penalty will end the problem… Take a human live or any creature it's can't be forgive…

victorcrums September 9, 2009

Death penalty just add the crime in the world… How the human can take someone live… That doesn't punishment.

astindietpi September 12, 2009

Yeah I'm agree with crums opinion… Death penalty, is bad way to handling crime in all country… How they can do that way to get best solution? Example: If someone already do some crime and get death punishment, did you think this will end the crime… That's nothing… If the prisoner have a child or family maybe their will do some crime too… and do you thing for do that way again…? This will continue from one generation to another generation so crime still in the world without solution if you do that (Death Penalty)…
