Weight Loss, Reasons Why Your Diet Will Not Work

Everyday people are attempting to attain weight loss and instead they are failing. You know they are failing by the sheer number of new products that comes on to the market every day. Here we will examine just a few of the many reasons why diets might fail.

It seems that the most popular diets are geared toward eliminating entire food groups. No, fat diets, diets with no carbs and some diets with no food at all! It is little wonder that people cannot lose weight.

The human body needs nourishment from several sources in order to perform at it’s peak. Eliminating a food group is not a healthy way to lose weight, chances are good that your body will actually rebel leaving you with no weight loss at all.

Losing little weight and getting hardly any nutrients, starvation diets are worse. That is because your body will go into what is known as starvation mode. If your body detects that you are no eating, then it automatically slows down your metabolism and increases it efforts to store body fat. This is to prevent you from dying under extreme circumstances. You potentially may be at risk for health problems even if you are able to surpass your body’s initial objections.

A healthy balanced diet is imperative for effective weight loss. This means that you must partake of all the food groups. Portion control is the better approach, as it allows you to get the needed nutrients while reducing your caloric intake.

Fad diets have a large following because many of them claim you can lose weight without any type of exercise. This is plainly false, you must consume less than you expend and to do this while getting proper amounts of nutrients require some form of exercise. It does not have to be extreme exercise, anything that raises your heart rate and increases oxygen intake will suffice. Our bodies were not made to be sedentary they need movement.

The greatest weight loss aid is as close as your kitchen sink. Your body is composed of mostly water, about 61.8%. Needless to say, water has a large impact on correct bodily function. The recommended daily allowance of water is eight 8-ounce glasses, but that is only the maintenance amount, if you do any type of strenuous activity or perspire a lot you will need to take in more fluids.

To create a healthy weight loss program you should bring all the elements above together. Eat properly, exercise regularly and drink plenty of water and you have the best weight loss plan on the planet.

Weight Loss is really about changing your lifestyle. Many people go on diets, lose weight, and then stop. Is there any question why that doesn't work. The proper way to loss weight and succeed is to do a diet that is functional for life not just short term. If you learn to eat in moderation with the right foods then weight management isn't hard.

I agree with this article, and to a degree I agree with Adam here. Long term weight loss IS about making a change in your lifestyle. But I also think that – for a LOT of people, that change is lifestyle is just way too drastic.

I think the key is to find a nutrition program that works WITH you – so you can get started gently, still allowing yourself time to make the lifestyle adjustment and not feeling like you're losing the part of your life that brings you that comfort and joy (like ice cream!). And once you realize how much better and healthier you start to feel by eating more "good" foods, you'll more than likely naturally start to gravitate towards them – and away from the junk.

  5. People are too obsessed with their weight and not enough with how they look. Who cares what you way you should be measuring your problem areas or track your body fat percentage.

  6. Tina says:

You raise a good point there… measuring MORE than just your weight is a great approach. However, most people just aren't going to take the time to get themselves properly measured – especially on a regular basis. And ultimately – because what you weigh is so easy to track – all the results of the measurement will eventually be converted into pounds and kilos (one way or another).

It just gets used as a "yardstick" – in the same way that people lean on the BMI. BMI is recognized as being imperfect (especially if you're reasonably athletic or lift weights), but it provides a decent yardstick that you can use to measure yourself. And let's face it – for the most part – being INSIDE the good range on your BMI count is probably better than being outside it (on either end of the spectrum).

  7. But you see that's the easy way out to use a scale. Problem is that scales are so inaccurate with tracking. Your weight can fluctuate dramatically depending on your water retention. One thing I suggest to a lot of people now is to either invest in a body fat monitor scale which tracks body fat percentage, weight, and water % or if they're too cheap just buy a hand held body fat analyzer.

Weight and BMI are terrible measurements to use. BMI doesn't account for muscle and weight doesn't account for water. If you're serious you will use a tape measure for those bad spots and your body fat percentage to know if you're losing fat.

  8. Tina says:

Not going to argue with you on those points – becuase I wholeheartedly agree (I even mentioned that BMI was inaccurate in my comment :-) ). However, I think the main thing to at least get people *started* on effective and healthy fat loss is to reduce what I call "the barriers to entry"

What I mean by that is this:

Let's look at the average person who wants to lose weight. Chances are, this *isn't* their first shot at it. And chances are, that – even though they're dissatisfied with their weight – the dissatisfaction hasn't been strong enough to keep them away from the ice cream / chocolate / potato chips / etc. And let's also remember how *difficult* it really is to start a diet / weight loss plan / fat loss plan (whatever you want to call it) at the very beginning.

Generally, it's tough enough to get started just eating "the right things" and cutting down on "the wrong things" without having to worry about correctly measuring your various "problem areas" or body fat percentage.

And while I completely, and wholeheartedly agree that these are things you *should* do – I see it as a potential road block for some people who would otherwise have no more excuses to start moving towards a healthier life.

Great points and a fun discussion! Thanks! :-)

  9. A great case in point to eating properly is Mike on the current biggest loser show. He was not losing weight like he should have been because he was starving his body of the energy it needed to burn the fat. As soon as Bob convinced him to start eating (correctly) he started to lose weight a lot quicker.

  10. Thanks for sharing. I've been overweight most of my life and found the calorie shiting diets to be the best option.

  13. Nice post buddy, couldn’t agree more. Weight loss is all about three simple things, mindset, diet and exercise

  14. Ayla says:

There is obviously a lot to know about this. I think you made some good points in Features also.

  15. Weight Loss says:

Excellent post, too often people over look the simplest solutions to their problems. Simply following a balanced diet with plenty of water and exercise would do people much better than follow the latest craze or fad diet.
