Looking for handy kitchen gadgets for your new kitchen? No matter how many tools and pots you have, your kitchen will always want a feeding of new items. Everyone knows that the hungriest of all kitchens are the ones just being set up. These are the homes with only a few dull knives, a cheap dented pot, and a nonstick pan complete with scratches. Is this sounding like your kitchen? Then maybe you could use a few of these handy kitchen gadgets.
Most people own a fruit and vegetable peeler. Taking the outside skin off potatoes, carrots, apples, green mangoes and other similar types of fruits and vegetables cant simply be done by hand, unless you’re a masochist who enjoys suffering. You can use a paring knife if you have one but its definitely easier and safer to use a peeler. It is also much faster!
Next we have the kitchen timer. You may not be on the Iron Chef show and you probably have more than an hour to create a fantastic dinner. Still, you will want to keep track of cooking time while working at the kitchen! Keeping time is a must to follow most recipes. For instance, overcooked pasta ruins your spaghetti; burnt pizza is not very appetising; and overcooking in general takes away the flavor from an otherwise excellent dish. Never mind that your microwave has a built-in timer. You still need a separate kitchen timer because one day someday, you’ll have to cook several dishes at the same time!
Microplane grater. There must have been life before the Microplane grater and other handy kitchen gadgets although it’s difficult to imagine how cooks of yore managed to grate nutmeg, zest, and ginger.
Garlic press. You probably know that garlic is a major ingredient of many foods. And if you have a little garlic press handy, you can cut your garlic prep time in half or less. Instead of cutting each clove individual after peeling off the skin, you can put it in with all of its skin and press, which also helps with cleanup.
Measuring spoons and cups. Even expert cooks and chefs have these handy. Theres just no substitute for measuring tool. If you want your food to taste consistently, the first step is to make sure your ingredients are accurately proportionate. Having too much of something changes the outcome of the entire recipe.
Corkscrew. Whether or not you drink wine, you might need to use one of these. You dont need to buy a fancy one as long as you find a corkscrew that is functional. Look for one that pulls the cork out whole and it has to do it without breaking the bottle. So, make sure your guests get to enjoy that bottle of sparkling red you brought home by having a corkscrew in the drawer.
Spatulas (solid and wok). A wok spatula is mainly used to stir fry foods. The traditional solid spatula is for lifting and turning and doesn’t have slots in it. Of course you’re not being asked to choose between these two handy kitchen gadgets, just pick one or both up for ultimate spatula versatility.
Whisks (balloon and flat). The flat whisk lets you get into one corner of a pan while you stir sauces. On the other hand, the balloon whisk lets you add volume. Start whisking your way to fluffier mixes with balloon and flat whisks.
Food processor. You don’t live in the dark ages so why not purchase one of these handy kitchen gadgets? A food processor is durable and can really speed up prep time if you use it to chop, dice, and puree vegetables, fruits and other food items.
Obviously you wouldn’t need to get these handy kitchen gadgets at one time but you have to start somewhere. For instance, you could get the measuring tools, the timer, spatulas, and processor then work your way through all the items you want. Eventually these items will be your handy little kitchen helpers as you prepare food for your family.
