When youre getting ready for your dream Africa Adventure, make sure your safari clothing doesnt get overlooked. Its easy to do. But the truth is, there are important safety issues you need to consider, as well as comfort.
What Are The Best Colors To Wear?
*
Wear light, neutral clothes. (But preferably not white, since white showcases every single mark!)
The African sun is strong, and if you think its hot in North America, wait till you get to parts of Kenya! Bold colors arent the best choice either – they may make wildlife more cautious because youll stand out (as well as sucking up heat like theres no tomorrow. On the other hand, light-toned attire will not absorb sun rays. You can test this out in your own back yard on a hot day, if weather permits ” but remember even in more temperate parts of Africa, the lack of shade will make it feel hotter.
Clothes that are loose-fitting, comfortable and above all long-sleeved will stop your skin from sizzling like an egg on a grill.
Rule Number 2
*
Basically any time except the hottest part of the day.
Long and tightly-fastened is the way to go, particularly as evening approaches and the mosquitoes come out. Pants covering your ankles, long-sleeved shirts buttoned at the wrist, and collars buttoned at the neck. It doesnt sound as much fun wearing a breezy loose t-shirt and shorts for safari clothing ” but anything that minimizes the risk of being bitten by African mosquitoes is a very good idea indeed.
Malaria is the disease to be cautious about ” but if youre going to a part of Africa where you may also be exposed to tsetse flies, you may have to worry about sleeping sickness too (luckily not as prevalent as it once was.)
Is Wrinkly Cotton Really Better Than Easy-Care Synthetic?
*
Let your skin breathe!
Natural cotton will allow your skin to breath. Avoid linen if youre worried about neatness, however ” it crinkles (though it will keep you cool!)
Cottons and linens (much more wrinkly) do reduce the risk of heat stroke by allowing your body to sweat.
What One Piece Of Clothing Should You Not Forget?
*
That would be your hat!
The best ones are light-colored, wide rimmed, made from substances that breathe. A tip to prevent this vital piece of equipment being blown off ” attach a drawstring, if it doesnt already have one; or pin it on with hair pins.
Health Benefit: A wide-brimmed hat will protect you against sun stroke.
Bring some light, natural fabric sleepwear too.
Jackets, shirts and pants with pockets are handy also ” keep in mind, youll need a place to store all those emergency extras its nice to have on hand: mosquito repellent, hair clips, Band-Aids, small odds and ends of camera equipment, sun screen, protective SPF15+ lip balm, goggle-style sunglasses (the best protection for your eyes) You get the picture, Im sure!
And finally, DO bring something warm to wear. Its true the days can be scorching ” but those night-time temperatures also can really plummet!
Starting with the 4 basic rules for safari clothing will help keep you not only cool and comfortable on your Africa vacation ” but safer too!

Great tips, but don't forget the hair! Even packing limited items, you'll need something to put your hair up on hot days and manage any frizz/tangle issues caused by the heat and humidity.
Well, these all really good useful info! great safari clothing tips..!thanks and one should also not forget to wear sunglasses too!
This year I think a lot of people are going to use their safari clothing in the backyard as fewer will be traveling. But these are good tips.
Hair straighteners are a must have accessory for every woman, and
GHD hair straighteners are especially renowned to be very effective.
One of the most important things to think about when packing is also the mosquitoes that will eat you raw at night if you don't pack long sleeve shirts and trousers. These mosquitoes are very good at getting in under the bottom of the pants, so if you don't mind the fashion questions, take a roll of ductape with you to tape around the bottom of the trouser leg (attaching the trousers to the socks or shoes). You will love me for this advice after the safari when your friends are eaten alive and have infected bites.
