Is there really such thing as a hardgainer?

Getting involved in a muscle building program can be pretty difficult work. Some people seem to struggle more than others, and some even believe that having a muscular frame is simply not possible for them. They may call themselves hardgainers because they think their bodies just weren’t designed to build muscle.

The debate between nurture vs. nature has been going on for a long time, and many have gone so far as to blame their entire circumstances on their genetic inheritance or their upbringing. It would be nice if you could blame all of your shortcomings, including your failures in the gym, on genetics. However, before we start to blame our parents for the genes that they passed on to us, we may want to take a minute and examine our actions that have led to failure.

Sure, some people are born with an advantage for muscle building. It’s just like music, sports, mathematics, and just about any career or industry you can think of. Some people have a natural ability in that field, while others have to work hard to become good at it. The truth is that everyone has to work hard regardless of innate ability or talent.

I’m not saying that taking on a weightlifting or muscle building program is going to be a piece of cake for you. It may actually be more difficult for you than for some other people.

If you can forget about the guys that seem to make progress without any effort, you can focus on your own training program and make impressive progress. Besides, those guys may not have it as easy as they would have you believe.

Perhaps more importantly, you’ll need to change your attitude towards your ability to build muscle. Believe it or not, your way of thinking can dramatically influence your results in the gym. If you enter a weightlifting program with the idea that you’re not going to succeed, you’ve already limited your results from the very beginning.

The truth is that virtually every obstacle can be overcome, and every mountain can be climbed. When you have that perspective, you can kiss the term hardgainer goodbye.

A positive mental attitude and a commitment means that you’ve won more than half the battle, but you still have to have the right knowledge to succeed. Make sure to learn from a proven bodybuilder who knows what it takes to succeed.
