Misdiagnosed in the early years, manic depression is unpleasant form of the condition as was not always taken seriously.
You may even know someone who suffers form it as they are prone to sudden changes in their moods and you may find that sometimes they are really low and at other times almost hyperactive. Many people actually experience erratic changes in their moods from time to time but these mood swings may actually caused by PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome) or stress. Regular and continual changes in a person’s temperament are a sure sign of depression that doctors now check for.
Manic depression, unlike normal depression can be recognized by mood swings where the sufferer starts to become impatient and angry over small things and may even throw tantrums. Unlike standard depression, manic depressives have times when they are not able to relax having large amounts of often unfocused energy, hence the term manic! Owing to this type of rapid swing in temperament, it can be difficult to deal with manic depressives as the mood can change rapidly to one of aggression and confrontation. Although these euphoric periods are generally brief, therapists who specialize in this behavior say that they can last for seven days or more during which periods of euphoria are not uncommon.
When it comes to the low or down periods, they can actually cause someone who is suffering from manic depression to experience very similar symptoms to those who are suffering from actual depression. The feeling of being of no use to anyone will over a period of time affect the persons mind and cause further problems for the therapist to overcome. Various symptoms may be displayed such as showing guilt, extreme sadness, anxiety attacks, feeling of not belonging, extreme pessimism and obvious loss for pleasure. According to therapists, an individual who is depressed consistently for more than a week can officially be diagnosed as someone who is suffering from manic depression.
In spite of being one of the most common, yet severe type of depressive disorder, manic depression can actually be treated. Catching this condition early enough is the key to successful treatment and by following the doctor’s orders to the letter, it can be overcome. Drugs alone will not help cure this condition and it is equally important that the sufferer must not feel isolated so access to their doctor is imperative so that reassurance and available advice can be given.
While relief may come from drugs and other natural medicines it is the behavioral therapist that will really make a difference in the long term. In fact cognitive behavioral therapists are still the primary resource in the care and treatment of people suffering with manic depression. It is now seriously believed that cognitive behavioral therapists are going to be the front line cure for bipolar depression.

I've a friend who was diagnosed with manic depression and suffered a relapse after missing her meds for weeks. Although mild depression can be treated with holistic methods such as therapy, coaching, severe cases such as manic depression has to be managed with the right medication together with other behaviourist therapies you mentioned as well. Good food for thought! Thanks for a well written article!
Yes, I tend to degree, medication is essential, as the condition is chronic. You have it for life, basically. There is a high level of non compliance among patients, because they tend either to not accept the illness or they think they are feeling well and they discontinue treatment. The sad part is that as the number of episodes increases, cognitive ability decreases, so this is a very serious issue. I am bipolar myself and personally I would not want to find myself without work in a decade because I cannot concentrate and learn anymore,
