In giving gifts, I also agree with you that "it's the thought that counts". Although there are people who, when they received a home-made gift, would frown and roll their eyes. I think these kind of people don't know the real meaning of gift-giving.
For me, I appreciate it if my little brothers would give me a hand-made Christmas present. Like last Christmas, my youngest brother made a Christmas card for me, it was a tacky-looking card and some of his spellings are not correct but I really really appreciate it because I know that even if he don't know how to make a Christmas card, he did push through and spent his time in making it anyway. Until now, the card is still posted in my bedroom's cork board and it puts smile on my face everytime I see it.
