Is Cosmetology School Practical For A Woman In Her 30′s?

When I was in high school, I was a social butterfly with no time for learning a trade. Cosmetology was offered, but it conflicted with my extra curricular activities. Once I got to college I realized how misplaced my priorities were. In my dorm across the hall these two girls from Maryland had set up shop…beauty shop. These smart fly girls did hair and nails and were making money!

One of my sisters went to Cosmetology while she was in high school. So of course she always makes sure her big sister’s hair is on point…but she’s in college up north so what does big sis do with her hair while she’s gone?

Well it just so happens that one of my best friends from Jr High is an awesome Cosmetologist…but she lives in the inland empire so my hair doesn’t get attention and TLC it needs that often. (That’s about to change).

I’m known for wearing my hair in a ponytail (my husband calls it the deluxe slick back). I will pull out the blow dryer, pressing comb, and curling iron when I have to… the problem is when I do my own hair it doesn’t look like it does when a professional does it.

I know I could always rock a fro, twists, dreads, or sister locks but I’m a flat iron, straightening comb, no perm/relaxer, wrap kind of woman. Yeah I know I can do braids, corn rows, weaves, and wigs. I go there occasionally. I think it would be cool to be able to do my own hair how ever I want to wear it.

I am seriously thinking about going to Cosmetology School, not to start a career in hair care, but to take care of my own hair. My sister’s hair always looks good, as does my best friend. It only takes 26 weeks (1600 hours). I can start in December and be done in June.

Having a trade can come in handy if and when I ever need to make some quick extra cash. I know a lady that turned her garage into a beauty shop. I’m sure the women in my family would encourage me to go to Cosmetology School so that I can do their hair when my sister’s away at school (smile).

Its something to consider. How much money would you save if you had the knowledge and skill to really do your own hair? (when I say really I mean it looks like you just came from the salon). Men how much money would you save if your wife/girlfriend knew how to do her own hair?

I know that even Cosmetologist oftentimes have other Cosmetologist do there hair, but its usually a choice (luxury) not a necessity. Its a great skill to have. You never have to make an appointment, wait, or pay. If you’re on vacation you change your hairstyle on a whim. If you have a bad hair day you can pull out your tools and fix it immediately!

1600 hours is a commitment of time well spent…

How do I get my hands on all those good things!? Blow dryers, Flat irons, Wigs. Wow, thanks for the post.

You should go for it! Whether or not you ever pursue hair styling as a career, you'll still have learned a valuable skill. Of course, lots of salons let you "rent a chair" for a few days a week to make extra cash, so that tempting. :)

    Good luck!

  3. I think you should take up cosmetology course..!after all you'll end learning a new skill plus you can really maintain your hair efficiently as you always wanted to do!

  4. Why would cosmetology school NOT be practical for a woman in her 30s? I know people in their 60's that are getting college degrees in totally new field. In this day and age you should do whatever your heart wants, regardless of how young or old you are. Plus I'm sure being a license cosmetologist will probably snag you some sweet deals on curling irons, flat irons, blow dryers, and all that good stuff :p

You should pursue what you desire. Don't let anyone or anything hold you back. Especially your age. Best of luck to you!

Hair straighteners are a must have accessory for every woman, and
GHD hair straighteners are especially renowned to be very effective.

I’m just curious if anyone has used it on fine, straight hair? Someone said it would be good for body, but I don’t want to burn my hair either (or make it any straighter than it already is)!

  8. Rebecca says:

I have thick, slightly curly hair and the Instyler makes it look like Halle Barry hair, I swear.

  9. Hope you decide to do it! Cosmetology is a great career for full-time and anyone looking for part time work. Salons are also really flexible in the hours that they offer. Plus you'd be working with other people who could do your hair too! Our students usually get a new hair style or color every 2 weeks :)

You're only in your 30s. Big deal. You are going to have to work for another 30 YEARS!!

I think that if a woman is really interested in it and wants to pursue it, she should go for it at any age. I'm 34 and what I have learned over my lifetime is that it is very important to do something that you enjoy sot hat you wake up not feeling overwhelmed with dread but that you can wake up knowing you do something you enjoy!

  13. My wife is a cosmetologist and it definitely has it's advantages. Like you said she can do her own hair and make it look like salon quality and she also does my hair which saves me anywhere from $15-$20 per month atleast. I'd say go for it. It will definitely be worth it for you.
