   We feel that garage sales has always been a strong part of the economy. Recently there has just been more press.

   I’ve noticed more garage sales in our neighborhood, too. I’m afraid it could be for several reasons, not excluding potential foreclosures. At first, I was hesitant about shopping rummage sales, feeling I might be taking advantage of other’s misfortune. But now I think if I can help someone out by handing them a bit of cash for things they need to sell and I want to buy, then we both benefit.

   Garage sales have two costs — the loss of items you may still care about and the time to organize and run the garage sale. But it has two big benefits, too: the money, of course, but also the freedom of being up to date, of jettisoning the flotsam of old, outdated "stuff."

   We have a magazine that talks about garage storage solutions, but a lot of our traffic and commentary addresses the mixed feelings about garage sales. Decluttering is freedom, no doubt, and then, once you have only the items you want, does having the right garage cabinets matter.

   If your garage is running out of space, try building an overhead storage system with plastic bins. The bins/totes can hang from your ceiling from rails or you can even stack and/or nest them on the ground. The Family Handyman magazine did a write up on Simplastics garage storage system once.
