With prices dropping all over the world on anything from flights to car rental, it is understandable that the number of people traveling abroad is increasing all the time.
However reports have shown that many people are choosing to leave their visitor insurance until the last minute, which can often lead to problems.
The insurance companies don’t offer discounts for last-minute applications. You should take your visitor health insurance much before you start out on any trip.
Many companies take at least two days to process your policy especially during the vacation time. So it is recommended to purchase the policies on time.
Take your own time while purchasing a policy. If you rush while buying you visitors insurance, it will be less likely that you are covered for everything you need.
There are a number of visitor insurance policies to choose from and it is advisable that you take some time to decide an appropriate policy.
You should be alert if you are buying an “inclusive” visitor medical insurance. Many times they are really commendable but you should check out for loopholes in the policy by reading the limits, rules and regulations of the policy carefully.
For example, some cover up to approximately ?750 for damaged or stolen items. This is not suitable for a family with ski equipment.
There are many programs on the television and the news that tell us about the problems that arise when somebody becomes ill during a vacation.
You can also suffer from serious stomach problems if you eat something strange while traveling to exotic locations and end up spending a lot of time in bed. An acquaintance unknowingly gulped down tap water leading to immense stomach cramps.
One of your kids might need to be rushed to the hospital to get treatment for asthama, sunstroke or even an insect bite. All outcomes of the above situations remain the same same; a vacation that is ruined, emptied the bank and put them off foreign holidays for many years to come.
In case you don’t want these circumstances to arise, try to safeguard your near and dear ones by purchasing visitors insurance.
Visitor health insurance policies are all different from each other. You should take into account the specific circumstances and needs and make sure that your visitor health insurance plan takes care of all these aspects.
Before you leave you should have as much information about your health policy and the limits of coverage as your agent does.
Always carry your health policy along with other documents while you travel.
* When you choose your visitor insurance policy, compare and check the maximum sums each health policy is prepared to pay.
* With your selected visitor medical insurance policy, consider whether you can extend your cover if you extend your vacation.
* Whilst selecting a health policy, look after the age limits or health restrictions that may be applicable.
* On choosing your visitor insurance policy, ensure if you are applicable to the terms like “pre-existing conditions” or “medical exclusions”.
Hence, visitor medical insurance can make a world of a difference to your holiday, even if you are not insured for traveling or if you do not avail any other visitors insurance.

Excelent blog and comments. Thanks and best regards from Germany Private Krankenversicherung
Thanks allot for your smart tips. It really helps allot!
A great list of tips. I like to add that if you are going on a winter sports holiday, you should really check the small printing in your insurance policy. Some insurers do not cover for certain sports, while the winter sports type of insurances often do not cover off-piste accidents.
Thank you for those travel tips. Some countries bill you for everything (individual anti-biotic drips etc) in the hospital. It’s vital you keep all receipts of all payments so you can claim EVERYTHING back you’ve paid for.
I never heard of visitor’s health insurance. That sounds like a really good idea.
That’s great advice. God forbid you should have a medical emergency while traveling, it will provide peace of mind to know that you’ll be covered. Conduct your search for visitors/travel insurance early to ensure that you’re getting the most for your money.
Hi,
Can I add one point to check, as this cost my parents 1000′s? Make sure that the partners costs are covered while the patient is in hospital.
My father had a heart attack while in Spain. His expenses were fully covered, but my mothers hotel, flights, food, taxi’s etc were not covered past the first two days of my fathers illness.
Trust me, four weeks in a foreign country can add up.
Take Care All
Visitor’s insurance save my finances last year when we went to London and my husband has a heart attack. We got excellent care there but our insurance through our his work would not have paid for it.
always make sure that you're fully covered for the holiday you're going on.

Visitor health insurance is beneficial for those who travel a lot. Before you start out on any trip, it is advisable that you take your visitor health insurance. Especially during holidays where lots of people travel, it is much better if you are covered by your insurance.

I had my appendix removed in Thailand – it ruptured and I had secondary infections and remained in hospital for 16 days on antibiotic drips. I was insured, but if I wasn't I'd have not been able to claim back the £2000 I'd spent on medical care (and this was in Thailand, which has excellent and relatively very cheap medical care). Get insured.
You have provided an excellent commentary on the benefits of visitors health insurance. All too often when we take trips or go on holiday, we seldom think of these situations that can befall us.
Excellent content provided here for travelers.

Mind if I add one tip? Using an agent is vital when getting new insurance – otherwise, you risk getting stuck with a plan that won't cover anything near what you think it will. Agents are experts on their plans and it's their job to be peppered with questions – don't hesitate to ask!
The Family and Medical Leave Act protects you, if it applies (check). You may have seen a sign for it hanging in your breakroom or a bathroom (your employer is required by law to display certain labor and wage signs in a conspicuous place).
Currently there are lot of mediclaim policies are available in market so depending on how much premium you can pay take a suitable policy. You can choose either individual medilaim quote or family floater quote depending on your requirement.
Nice article, but I knew most of the tipps already
