Living A Lasting Legacy

Mon, 11th August, 2008 - Posted by Living Life Abundantly

My grandmother always says “we didn’t come here to stay forever” and “everybody wants to see Jesus, but nobody wants to die to see Him.”

I went to buy “The Kings of Comedy” yesterday, when I got home I learned that Isaac Hayes was found dead in his home and the cause of death was unknown. The words of my grandmother again come to mind…she says “people are really crossing over…”

Two greats gone in two days!!!

Our next breathe is neither promised or guaranteed. As the world mourns the loss of Isaac Hayes and Bernie Mac, we are all reminded of our own mortality.

None of us came to stay forever, but some of us will never be forgotten.

Isaac Hayes was a “Bad Mutha” that touched us with his extraordinary music. Bernie Mac tickled our funny bone and used humor to entertain, educate, and empower. These men did not come to stay forever, but they certainly leave behind lasting legacies for generations to come.

Living Life Abundantly = Living A Life Worth Remembering

As the world mourns the loss of Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes, may we also take inventory of our own lives and consider the legacy that we will one day leave behind…

A Psalm of Life
by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
Life is but an empty dream! ?
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
Was not spoken of the soul.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each to-morrow
Find us farther than to-day.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.

In the world’s broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!

Trust no Future, howe’er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act,–act in the living Present!
Heart within, and God o’erhead!

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time;

Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o’er life’s solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.

Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.

It is always sad to hear of somebody who contributed a lot to our entertainment dying…I do like your grandma’s saying though about not coming here to stay forever…sometimes it would be nice if we could!

It was sad news this week. Two men that entertained us, one made us laugh the other brought us song. They will be missed.

I remember Shaft in the early 70’s cause I’m that old and Isaac was a real HERO and Richard Roundtree as well of course. And you know Isaac did kind of stick out a little then because he shaved his head like Telly Savalas. But he will be surely missed and he left us a good reminder that we got to check out with the DR before we do cardio. Sometimes it might be better to work out in a gym.

It was very saddening to hear of the losses of these 2 brilliant people who forever will be remembered forever in our hearts. I love the music of Isaac Hayes, I remember listening to it as a little child as my parents played it and I continued to listen to it throughout my life but never got to see a live show. However, Bernie Mac, one of my favorite comedians I did get the opportunity to see him live and I will cherish that forever. It is such a sad loss to the world to see these great men leave but at least they are in better place now.

I am absolutely stunned at such a terrible coincidence. Two fantastic entertainers who had recently been working together on “Soul Men”. A tragic loss.

I couldn’t believe it when I heard Bernie Mac died. He was so young and so very funny. It seems terrible and like a waste.

i too was shocked as everybody else with the passing of these two guys, both being two of my favorite personalities… it has definitely reminded us that our life is borrowed, and that it is upon us how well we use it…
