Upon hearing of Bernie Mac’s death my heart sank. Many thoughts raced through my mind like:
He was so young,The more I thought about it, the more uncomfortable I became. Like everyone else, I was saddened by the news, but it affected me different because it hit home.
No, I didn’t know Bernie Mac personally.
I never even met him.
I am a fan of his work and I respect his talent.
Aside from the obvious reasons, Bernie Mac’s death hit me like a ton of bricks today because I had read awhile back that Bernie Mac had Sarcoidosis and all day I wondered if his death was related to or caused by Sarcoidosis.
From what I’ve heard, he was in remission and died from complications with Pneumonia. I know for most people, that is a satisfactory explanation of how an otherwise healthy 50 year old man could die so suddenly… but for those who have been touched by the many mysteries and unknowns of Sarcoidosis, it sounds off alarms.
People diagnosed with Sarcoidosis are usually told its rare and that less than 5% of people with it actually die from it….but from what I’ve experienced….been hearing, reading, and seeing over the years… I’m inclined to think thats fragglenagglebull.
There was a study that linked Prednisone with a 70% increased risk of developing Pneumonia. Why would that study mean anything to people affected by Sarcoidosis?
Prednisone is the main treatment for Sarcoidosis! Prednisone suppresses the immune system (as does Methotrexate which is also used to treat Sarcoidosis)…
Is that not an eyebrow raiser to anyone else? I don’t know if Bernie Mac was taking any medications or not for Sarcoidosis…but all day I wondered…. Right now its 2:45 am and I’m still wondering…
If you know me, you know the deal with Sarcoidosis and you know my thoughts on prescription drugs…
Aside from any possible Prednisone Pneumonia connection, does anyone remember when he was hospitalized after filming Oceans Eleven? At that time, it was said that he had pneumonia with more pronounced symptoms of Sarcoidosis… All of this just makes me wonder…
Death rate extrapolations for USA for Sarcoidosis: 572 per year.
I would be lying to you and myself if I didn’t admit that these developments caused a brief jolt of fear….but I stand on my faith (God hasn’t given me a spirit of fear) and I also remember Bernie’s words…. I AIN’T SCARED OF YOU……….. Perhaps those facing battles of their own will remember those words too.

I was touched by your post. You definitely raised some interesting questions. I’ll miss Bernie Mac.
I was SHOCKED. I thought it was a mistake. It’s tragic, just like Luther. Unbelievable.
When I heard Bernie Mac passed yesterday I said to myself if I had 20 more years to live (IM 30) what would I be doing differently…Possibly what Bernie Mac was doing..living his dream and valuing family and life. The last time I saw him was on Oprah’s show and I knew that he valued the right things..his family. Bernie Mac has left behind great works and great trends. Even his sitcoms and stand-ups focused on family. If I can take anything away from this tragedy it is the idea that some things are just more important than others and family is one of them.
God never promised life would always be filled with sunshine. He sends the rain to remind us to praise and thank him for his goodness. Be Blessed!!
