Summer Job for Students

Tue, 10th June, 2008 - Posted by Marenda Taylor

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the nation’s teens, ages 16 to 19, are experiencing a record low employment rate since the late 1940s.

While it looks like slim pickings and tough competition for high school and college students seeking summer jobs, there is hope. I got a heads up from my friend Shannon, on a Full-time Summer Employment opportunity for students with the Los Angeles Department of Water & Power.

It seemed appropriate to not only post the opportunity but list other opportunities as well. If you or someone you know is looking for a summer job please share this information.

Summer Jobs:

local high school who will be entering into their junior or senior year by Fall 2008. Work permits are
required for students under 18 years of age. In addition, student workers shall comply with the established policies and practices of the SWP and those of their local high school.

My job every summer was as a summer camp counselor. Sure you have to work with children, but the pay is usually good, you get to be out of the house for the summer, and get to be in a different city. And they are always looking for new staff.

One of the best student jobs for the summer is window washing or landscaping. Or if the kid had a brain and a bit of computer knowledge they could become a BLOGGER!

I know it is probably blamed for everything now, but I was listening to NPR and they were commenting on how many kids were not working as much because of the gas prices. Apparently parents are not as quick to let their children drive or borrow the car now.

I was able to teach Safety Town at the age of 14, then got my lifeguard training and did that in the summers until I went to college. They were great jobs–Safety Town was a blast, especially for a young person.

We own a small family business and I imagine my son will grown up working there in some capacity. I think it’s good for kids to work at a young age, just something small to ease them into the workplace and help them to start learning the value of money.

Working during the vacation period is a great way for students to fill their pockets…Nice article
