Safety is a very important part of business. Companies almost always need their employees to attend certain sessions focusing on safety training. But the problem arises when the employees can’t seem to find time from their schedules to attends such things.

The next best alternative is the use of training videos to school employees on the basics of safety and the measures you should abide by. Although not quite as effective as training done with human supervision and actual lectures, it works to almost the same effect. The videos are designed to give the most amount of information in the shortest amount of time.

Safety training videos make sure that all the employees of the company get the same training and the same information, without any missing pieces or bits of information that people are sometimes prone on making. The lectures are not distorted, which is what happens when there are different lectures for every group of employees the company has.

One of the best things about safety training videos is the fact that they can be viewed from almost anywhere and at any time the employee wishes to. This gives almost unlimited flexibility to using the video instead of attending a regular seminar. The downside of this is the lack of face-to-face instruction that is sometimes better at teaching certain things.

From construction safety training to laboratory safety training, there are as many safety videos as you can imagine. A ton of websites offer to sell their videos to companies, with things such as manuals included. Safety training videos work best for very large companies with a very big population that is continually expanding. This not only cuts the costs that they would’ve had from hiring a trainer but also makes sure everybody is getting the same thing.

For workers assigned to do hands-on work, there are some videos that are custom made for a certain company. This is good because it shows the safety measures specific to that company and the exact duties expected of the employee.

Safety definetly is an important thing in the workplace, however sometimes i feel that training videos go into almost patronising description. I suppose you have to cater for all though!

I always find that with safety training, videos work well, but in order to get the most out of them, you should have props accompany a video. For example, respirator training videos are more effective if an employee can handle a respirator and get the feeling for adjusting the straps for a perfect seal and also to get used to wearing one, especially the full face models. In this way, you still are not using personnel time to conduct training, but the use of actual safety gear as props facilitates employee learning and will help quickly acclimate them to your safety culture.

Safety instruction video's and safety posters are a nice recourse and reminder after a training. Nowadays a lot of company's (especially the company’s handling and producing chemicals) have their own specific videos.

The most important thing is that, when the time comes, everyone will be fully prepared. Respirators, Knowledge of exits and evacuation routes, etc. The more you prepare the better off you will be. I know of a company in the WTC buildings that was supposedly saved on Sept. 11 because of preparation.
