One of the most challenging and fulfilling jobs a person could have is that of the electrician. The skill of managing, maintaining and running several electrical devices is a skill that amazes many people. But it takes intense training and dedication to become an engineer: they usually train for 3 to 4 years before attaining the position. And there are many types of engineers as well. One of them is the substation engineer.

These guys are the ones in charger of constructing and maintaining electrical substations. It is their job to install and maintain a lot of things including electric relay devices, control cables, high-voltage cables, communication equipment, power transformers, and station batteries. But a substation electrician doesn’t just deal with just these set of equipment but all those that are required by the electrical substation.

Because the job is physically exacting and even potentially dangerous, it’s best for the substation engineer to be sound in both mind and body. He or she must also possess great knowledge of various safety practices and regulations as to be capable of handling any situation. To be a good substation electrician, you must do well in your particular training program, have extensive knowledge of electrical theory and at least for years experience being apprenticed or working in a power plant, electrical substation or other similar working areas.

It is very important that they are familiar with the safety precautions in each and every substation or plant that they work in. It is of course expected that they have mastery in the installation, maintenance and operation of basic substation equipment.

Good communication and leadership skills are also expected of the electrician. This is one big draw for companies, especially if the electrician can read, write and express himself well. A lot is expected of them but with these traits, any substation electrician can be very efficient at the tasks assigned to him or her.
