Lock Bumping: How Secure Is Your Home?
Those with ferocious trained attack dogs like mine (pictured on the left) rarely lose sleep over home security.
Home security is an issue that for some reason people take lightly. I guess people think a home invasion can’t happen to them….Years ago, my husband worked for ADT and was often amazed by how so many home owners were uninterested in investing in securing their homes.
I’m from the school of it is better to have and not need, than need and not have.
I bring this up because I received a disturbing email showing how burglars are breaking into homes by walking right through the front door. Here’s the video:
People that use home alarm systems don’t have to worry much about lock bumping because even if the lock is bumped the alarm must be deactivated with a code. With most alarm systems, if the code is not activated the police show up right away, and in some cases with their weapons drawn!
Take the appropriate measures to secure your home and protect your family.
5 Ways to Secure Home:
- Install quality locks on all windows and doors.
- Install an alarm system.
- Use video cameras and peepholes.
- Post warning signs/stickers (beware of dog, alarm system signs).
- Install outdoor motion lighting.

That is unbelievable. I can’t believe that people waste their lives figuring out ways to be able to steal from others. Thank you for posting this video and alerting all of us readers.
What we need to do is focus on the “family”. Teach our children to be good people, full of respect and law-abiding citizens.

FYI,
1. Make it look like you’re home.
Of course burglars and intruders are less likely to ‘hit’ an occupied residence. Use timers on lights, the TV, the radio etc.
2. Leave your curtains like you normally would.
Don’t leave all of your blinds and curtains in the same positions, some open, some closed - just every day positions.
3. Turn your phone/s and answering machine down/off.
There’s a better chance of someone breaking in if they hear repeated rings or messages being left.
4. Don’t re-record your answering machine/voicemail message.
NEVER leave an answering machine message to the effect of “this is the Jones family. We’ll be in Portugal for two weeks, please leave a message”. Do that and you’re asking for trouble.
5. Newspapers & Mail
Ask a friend, neighbor or family member to pick up your mail and/or newspaper.
6. Lawncare
If you’re going to be away for an extended period arrange for someone to cut your lawn.
7. Move your car
If you leave your car in your driveway, have someone move it once in a while.
8. Natural defenses
Plant some nasty roses or something really thorny and uncomfortable under your first floor windows.
