“Americans are stupid people by and large. We pretty much believe whatever we are told.” —The Wire

TheWireAfter waiting a year for the final season of the best show on television, HBO delivered the goods last night with the premiere of season five: Read Between the Lines.

The Wire is known for authentically depicting all aspects of urban life. Every episode peels back layers of hidden truths that are often startling, uncomfortable, and unforgettable. The season premiere packed a major punch that should serve as a serious wake up call to us all:

The Bigger The Lie, The More They Believe!

Would you say that this is a true statement? Most of us would like to believe that we are highly intelligent…too smart to be hoodwinked or bamboozled. Perhaps some of us are…However, its the majority of us that counts. Considering this is an election year, this assertion is worth examining because if majority of us are willing to accept and believe whatever we are told, all of us are screwed!

Shows like The Wire remind us that we cannot just accept what we are told as absolute truth. We must step away from herd mentality, think for ourselves, read between the lines, and use our own reasoning. While it seems that most of what we learned in school does not apply to every day life, there is a formula that perhaps majority of us have forgotten, that can and should be applied to everyday life in conjunction with common sense (which apparently isn’t so common lol). Remember the Scientific Method?

Scientific MethodUsing the Scientific Method may help in determing fact from fiction. It will certainly arouse your curiousity and interest in seeking information beyond what you are told.

To affect change, we must change. In 2008, lets begin with changing how we receive and process what we are told!
