Prostitution Causing Businesses to Close Doors in Compton

If you know anything about Compton, you know that Long Beach Boulevard is often referred to as the “hoe stroll” and not because of the many businesses selling gardening tools. No matter the time of day or night , 24/7, 365, it has become the norm to see half naked street walkers peddling sex. Along with the sex service providers come the pimps and patrons…This unsavory element has forced several businesses to close their doors, the most recent business to flee was Quiznos. The City of Compton and Compton residents decided to take action to rid Long Beach Boulevard of the lascivious outlaws running the street.

On Friday October 26th at 7pm armed with banners and signs, neighborhood block clubs, residents, city officials, pastors, and churches held the first ever Anti-Prostitution March on Long Beach Boulevard.

I did not attend the event or participate in the march. I wish I had pictures to prove I’m not making this stuff up. I understand the sentiment of the march but I’m not sure how effective a march will be in ridding the streets of prostitutes. As a matter of fact, I drove down Long Beach Boulevard yesterday and saw several working girls.

Maybe the anwser to the prostitution, pimp, and john problem is in dealing with the issues that have caused people to live such lifestyles. Understanding the mentalities of people involved in these types of behaviors can help provide insight as to how to effectively deal with the issue. Getting them off one street only sends them to another…offering them an alternative…some help maybe might be a solution…

support…counseling…rehab…education…job preparation…job placement…guidance

Ok so I don’t have all the answers either but I know a march is not enough and chasing prostitutes from one street to another doesn’t resolve anything.

I got an A in Economics back in high school…there’s a reason prostitution is one of the oldest professions…SUPPLY & DEMAND…as long as there is a demand for sex and people are willing to pay for it there will always be prostitutes.

The city of Compton has a adopted a new slogan “Rebirthing a New Compton.” I hope this rebirth is one in which the city and residents are proactive and genuinely concerned for the well being of the entire community including the prostitutes, pimps, and johns. When I think of rebirth I think of second chance, I think renew, I think regenerate, and to be born again…If the City of Compton wants a rebirthing the residents must also experience a rebirth… so instead of spending time and energy on anti-prostitution marches… maybe a plan to include the participants in prostitution in this rebirthing is in order.

What do you think?

Keep the hoes on the stroll. Because the guy's that can't get it for free pay for it and if they can't pay for it they take it. Rape is an awful thing. So leave the hoes alone.

Prostitution here in Compton has gotten worse. A couple of years ago, my daughter has seen more than just a half naked (social worker), but has seen her bare genitalia on the stroll (Long Beach Blvd). Several years later… my child can't even go out with me without seeing one of those prostitutes shaking their behinds for advertisement purposes… to get their patron. It's sad. There's a new spot for them the family and I now call the Strawberry Patch. It's Bestway Supermarket on Long Beach Blvd., in Compton. It's really bad… I can guess most of these girls are underage. What's even worse, the Sheriffs just ignore them and do nothing… and give tickets to people's parked vehicles on the streets instead. It seems they have their priorities in the right direction.

I live really close to Long Beach Blvd. I am a young woman. I don't have a car so I have to walk and ride the bus to get around, but I can't even walk down the street without being tormented by the Pimps and the Johns. Because I am young and black and on a bus stop the Johns assume I am a prostitute (which is a horrible assumption). Because I am young and black and on a bus stop the Pimps constantly bother me and try to intimidate me into becoming a prostitute (which is equally horrible). Luckily, I am educated and do not have a weak mind and I have self respect, unlike some of those women on that Blvd who sell their bodies. About a month and a half ago one Pimp tried to snatch me with the intent of putting me in his car.

I don't feel safe and everyone has a right to feel safe in their environment, especially when they pay taxes to live in that enviornment.

  5. Very terrible, its really a bad situation that just keeps getting worse. The sheriffs who ignore them are just adding to the problem. I don't know how much a rally could work, but it is a good start.
