By now I’m guessing you have already figured out that my name is Marenda. Back in December I decided it was time to start my own website. When I attempted to register Marenda.com I found that it was taken. Someone else owns and controls Marenda.com. Someone beat me to the punch
so I bought Marenda.Biz and here we are.
Does someone own your name or is your name available as a domain name?
A domain name is your Internet address…it’s your very own piece of the Internet. Claiming a domain name is basically claiming virtual real estate.
Domain:
A territory over which rule or control is exercised.
The land of one with paramount title and absolute ownership. —Dictionary.com
More and more people are buying their names online. People are buying their kids names, celebrity names, business names, phrases, song titles, and popular slang as domain names. Others have made millions buying and selling domain names. Kevin Ham is one of the biggest dotcom moguls. Its estimated that he owns over 300,000 domain names including God.com. A man named Yun Ye owned 100,000 domain names and sold them to a company called Marchex for $164 million. There is some money to be made in the domain name business.
In the past three years alone, the number of dotcom names has soared more than 130 percent to 66 million. Every two seconds, another joins the list. — Money.CNN.Com
If you don’t already own your name perhaps thats where you should start. I own a few domain names but now I’m inspired to start buying more. You may not have a clue as to what to do with your domain names today but at least you’ll them if and when that light bulb shines above your head or someone wants to buy them from you. It’s less than $10 to buy your name what are you waiting for?
According to Kevin Ham, “If you control all the domains,” he says, “then you control the Internet.”

I tried to buy my full name as a domain, like johnsmith.com. But somebody already had it, and wasn’t doing anything with it at all. So I hired a domain arbitrator to negotiate on my behalf to try and buy it, and they said it would probably cost around $2000! I gave up after that…
But you’re right, domain names can definitely be valuable. You might need some serious money though to start investing in domain names though.
Very nice information. I was wondering about this, and your post explained what I needed to know. Thanks for this.
Hmmm, interesting. I've thought the same question before myself. My own name is camped, it's kind of unfortunate
Kudos on the blog post. With the low cost for domains and hosting, it makes no sense to use "free" services.
